World of Anterra is a hand-drawn open-world RPG from 81monkeys, a small Canadian studio, and it built a queue before it built a store page. Steam lists it for 2026, the official site takes pre-orders for Desktop & Console, and 150,000 people have wishlisted it without a demo, a date or a marketing budget.
This site answers what those people are typing: what the game is, when it lands, how combat and parties work, and whether it plays with friends. Every page is built from official material only, with a check date at the foot.
Before you play: what to know first
Five facts do most of the work.
- It is not out yet. The Steam page carries a 2026 window and a coming-soon flag; there is no day or month anywhere in the listing.
- It is a handcrafted world, not a generated one. The studio's own line is "100% human made": hand-animated sprites, a custom real-time lighting engine, dynamic weather and day-night cycles.
- Combat is a hybrid. Quick-time actions layered over grid-based movement, with weaknesses, environmental mechanics and rare consumables as the difficulty levers.
- You build a party from gear, not classes. There is no published class list; party members are defined by items and equipment, rendered through an animation layering system.
- Co-op is tagged, not detailed. Steam lists online co-op, shared and split screen co-op, cross-platform multiplayer and Remote Play Together, but no player count.
The overview guide expands each one; the release page explains what "2026" promises.
Direct answers
When does it come out? Steam lists 2026 and marks the game as coming soon; the studio's FAQ says the launch is planned as Early Access in 2026. No day or month is published.
What platforms? Windows on Steam; the official site takes pre-orders as "Desktop & Console", with no console name or date published.
Can I play it now? No. A backer demo is promised before launch, and the free itch.io download is a teaser art bundle rather than a build — the demo guide tracks it.
How many players? Steam tags single-player, multi-player, online co-op, split screen co-op, cross-platform play and Remote Play Together, but states no player number; the co-op guide reads each tag.
Is it worth following? If a hand-built world with typed dialogue is what you want, this is the most interesting unreleased example in the genre. The updates timeline is where a date will appear.
How to read this site
New here: the three pages under "Start here" — overview, release, co-op. Already sold: go to combat, party and gear and progression and loot, which describe how a run plays.
For the world, start with water, fishing and sailing: it is built on the studio's most detailed technical post.
What makes it unusual
Two promises stand out: a UI built around "tactile items and icons rather than menus and text", and a retro dialogue system where "you can even type your own questions". The lore guide covers the world behind them.
